EU regulations and consumer demands are putting pressure on fashion chains. Here’s how tailors can solve the problem.

Why tailors will be crucial to the industry

The EU’s sustainability regulations and consumers’ growing demands for circularity are putting pressure on clothing companies. Repairing a garment rather than returning or throwing it away is becoming an increasingly important part of the solution.

Pressure is mounting from several quarters

EU regulations

From 31 July 2026, all EU Member States must have implemented the EU’s Right to Repair Directive.

The directive requires the creation of a European repair platform where people can find tailors and other repair services. The European Commission is to establish the common EU interface by 31 July 2027 at the latest, and the platform is to be fully operational from 1 January 2028.

However, there is not yet a universal right to repair. Its scope remains limited to specific product groups, implementation will vary between Member States, and several supporting measures are still several years away

Consumer behaviour

At the same time, pressure from consumers is also mounting. More and more people have started using platforms such as Vinted and Sellpy in recent years. On these platforms, you can sell your clothes on the second-hand market. But what is still missing is a system for repairing existing or damaged garments.

Return costs

As well as consumers now demanding the right to have their garments repaired by local tailors, this also benefits fashion chains. A large proportion of the major clothing companies’ costs are currently linked to garment returns. This can easily be avoided if clothing companies can offer a platform for repairing garments.

A proposed solution

One suggestion for solving this problem is to bring all tailors together on a single platform. This platform can then be integrated via the clothing companies’ own websites.

How Qfix can solve the problem

Qfix brings all tailors together on a single platform so that clothing companies can comply with EU directives and reduce their returns costs.
